The McAllen Public Utility Board of Trustees selected Assistant General Manager Mark Vega to oversee the Public Utility Department effective April 1st.  Vega will replace General Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. who was selected to oversee the City of McAllen after City Manager Mike R. Perez announced his retirement.

Vega was born and raised in McAllen and graduated from Texas A&M University – Kingsville with a B.S. in Civil Engineering.  He worked for a consulting engineering firm for nearly four years prior to entering the public sector.

“I feel extremely humbled for two reasons: First, I feel blessed in being appointed Interim General Manager by the Public Utility Board. I was born and raised in McAllen, making it a tremendous honor and a privilege to help run this organization alongside some very talented and dedicated people,” Vega said. “Second, I feel like a new coach taking on a championship team at McAllen Public Utility.”

Vega will fill the position on an interim basis until the position is posted, candidates apply and a decision is made for a permanent replacement.

“In the next few months, I plan on meeting with our board members to discuss expectations, vision and goals for this organization.  At MPU excellent customer service is our mission,” said Vega.  “Last but not least, we at MPU were very fortunate to have had such a terrific example of a leader in Roy Rodriguez, an example that will serve all of our staff very well for years to come.”

Vega started with the McAllen Public Utility in 2003 as Assistant to the Utility Engineer, promoted to Utility Engineer in 2006 and currently serves as Assistant General Manager since 2010.  He is married to Daniela Vega and has a step-daughter Nicole.
