PUB Vice-Chairman Williams receiving Water Environment Federation Public Official Award for dedication to water stewardship and infrastructure development

The Water Environment Federation (WEF) will honor McAllen Public Utility (MPU) Vice Chairman Ernest Williams with the prestigious Public Official Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to water and wastewater infrastructure and his commitment to sustainable water management in McAllen. MPU Vice Chairman Williams will receive the Individual Service and Contribution Awards Public Official Award from WEF at its annual conference in New Orleans next month. The WEF works every day to fulfill the mission of inspiring the water community in pursuit of human and environmental well-being.

Williams, who has served on the MPU Board of Trustees since 2009, has been a driving force in ensuring the continued innovation and development of the utility’s services. His leadership has been instrumental in guiding several critical infrastructure projects, including the South Wastewater Treatment Plant expansion, the production of Type 1 reclaimed water at the North Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the construction of the South Water Recovery Plant Maintenance and Operations Building.

“Ernest’s dedication to improving our city’s water and wastewater systems is unparalleled,” said Mark Vega, P.E., General Manager of McAllen Public Utility. “His leadership and vision have not only enhanced service delivery but have also helped protect our precious water resources through initiatives like reclaimed water use for irrigation and industrial applications. This award is a testament to his commitment to public service and environmental stewardship.”

Under Williams’ leadership, MPU has appropriated over $167 million in infrastructure projects since 2018, focused on improving service reliability, protecting the environment, and promoting water conservation. Williams’ efforts have helped position McAllen as a leader in innovative water management solutions, benefiting both residents and the broader Rio Grande Valley region.

Williams expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, “It’s been an honor to serve the people of McAllen and to work with such a dedicated team at MPU. Our goal has always been to ensure that we provide the best possible service to our ratepayers while protecting the environment and conserving resources for future generations.”

The Water Environment Federation’s Public Official Award is given annually to elected or appointed public officials who have demonstrated leadership in advancing sustainable water and environmental policies. Williams’ commitment to MPU’s mission and his long-standing involvement in the community made him a standout candidate for this national recognition.
