Expanded Hours of Operation for Empty Southbound Commercial Trucks to Begin at Anzalduas International Bridge

by Public Information Office | Jan 11, 2021

Today, the McAllen Bridge System announced that beginning on Monday, January 18, 2021, it will begin operating with expanded hours for empty southbound commercial trucks at Anzalduas International Bridge.  On that day, hours of operation will be 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. everyday.  Currently, hours of operation are 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.  The additional hours are intended to decongest and facilitate the rapid flow of southbound empty commercial traffic. With trade between the United States and Mexico fueling the economy between the two nations, the extended hours of operation will further solidify Anzalduas International Bridge as the preferred corridor for southbound empty commercial traffic.

“The expanded hours of operation for southbound empty commercial trucks is just the next step for the bridge to become a fully functioning commercial crossing, boosting the economy on both sides and further strengthening the bond between McAllen and Reynosa, Texas and Tamaulipas and the United States and Mexico as great trade partners,” said McAllen Mayor Jim Darling.

The growing demand of empty southbound commercial traffic was the inspiration behind the request by the McAllen Bridge System to Mexican Customs.  With Anzalduas International Bridge strategically designed to serve as a connection between the active industrial parks located in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico and the United States, the demand to facilitate southbound traffic triggered the extension of hours of operation for empty southbound commercial hours.

The extended hours of operation for empty southbound commercial trucks at Anzalduas International Bridge is a bin-national achievement made possible by the collaboration and partnership between the United States and Mexico.

Anzalduas International Bridge is a regional economic engine powered by international trade and fueled by the collaboration with our partners in Mexico,” said McAllen City

Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E.  “Thanks to the partnership with Mexican Customs, the extended hours at Anzalduas International Bridge solidifies a stronger economy in the Rio Grande Valley.”

“We are delighted to announce additional southbound hours of operation for empty truck traffic; and I personally would like to extend an invitation to commercial truck drivers traveling south to cross thru the Anzalduas International Bridge because we can get you through faster.” said Superintendent of Bridges’ Juan Olaguibel.

Anzalduas International Bridge began receiving southbound empty commercial vehicles in August 2016, after petitioning both the U.S. and Mexico’s federal government.  Crossing empty southbound commercial traffic is the first step for the City of McAllen to prepare to make the bridge fully commercial ready.
