City of McAllen to Initiate Vision Zero Plan Development, Paving the Way for Safer Multi-Modal Transportation

by Office of Communications | Feb 26, 2024

Community stakeholders input, grant funding will help launch effort

The City of McAllen will be launching outreach efforts to develop Vision Zero Action Plan. The Vision Zero Action Plan is a traffic safety plan that will be created through data unique to the community in order to create safer transportation systems with a goal of reducing injuries and fatalities on McAllen roadways to zero. The outreach will include a multi-faceted approach, integrating education, engineering, evaluation, enforcement, and policy.

In order to help develop the plan, McAllen’s Traffic Operations Division will be inviting residents, community advocates, and stakeholders to actively participate in the community engagement process of the Vision Zero Action Plan. Community input and engagement will be crucial in shaping the success of this transformative initiative. The team developing the plan will conduct surveys at strategic locations throughout McAllen, ensuring the inclusion of all road users and diverse stakeholders.

To help develop the plan, the City of McAllen received a $150,000 from the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Planning and Demonstration grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, dedicated to the initiation of the Vision Zero Action Plan.

McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos expressed gratitude for the grant and highlighted the significance of the Vision Zero Action Plan for McAllen's future. "The development of McAllen’s Vision Zero Action Plan is a testament to our city's commitment to the safety and well-being of our residents. Additionally, much like the recent development of McAllen’s Comprehensive Plan, input from our residents and other stakeholders is key to smart, sustainable growth that McAllen is known for.  McAllen's Vision Zero Action Plan will not only make our streets safer, but also contribute to the overall quality of life in our community."

This innovative plan, rooted in the belief that no loss of life or serious injuries is acceptable on McAllen’s transportation system, represents a pivotal step forward in McAllen's commitment to public safety and the well-being of its residents.

More information on the plan will be available on the City of McAllen website www.mcallen.net and on City of McAllen social media accounts.
