In response to the recent influx of immigrants to the Rio Grande Valley, The University of Texas-Pan American is collecting toiletries and other basic needs supplies starting Friday, June 20 and Monday through Friday, June 23-27.
Boxes will be set up in seven locations across campus and other UTPA facilities:
- College of Health Sciences and Human Services Buildings: HSHE and HSHW (Dean's Office)
- International Trade and Technology (ITT) Building
- Library
- Student Union
- Visitors' Center
- CESS building, 1407 E. Freddy Gonzalez Drive
- Alumni Center, 2402 S. Closner Blvd.
Those who cannot make the trip to give their items can call the College of Health Sciences and Human Services Office of the Dean at (956) 665-2291 to schedule a pick-up of the donations.
The contents of the collection boxes will be gathered at least once per day by 5 p.m.
Requested items are limited to the following (all items must be in new condition, sealed original containers):
Basic Supplies
Diapers
Baby wipes
Hand sanitizer
Toothbrushes
Toothpaste
Feminine products
Bottled water
Medical Supplies
Tylenol
Ibuprofen
Band-Aids
Gauze pads
Medical tape
Peroxide solution
Cotton balls
No cash donations or clothing will be accepted. Though all of the above are needed, baby-related items are the most needed.
Dr. John Ronnau, dean of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services, said the idea to implement the drive came after hearing from faculty members and students in the Physician Assistant Program who have been volunteering their time at local Border Patrol stations about the needs the stations and immigrants have.
"UTPA takes community engagement very seriously," Ronnau said. "We want to be responsive to his humanitarian crisis that is occurring along the border here."
Members of the community at large are welcome to drop off donated items at the above listed locations, Ronnau said.
