Patrons of McAllen Public Library have an opportunity to help the less fortunate and help themselves out of library fines with a “Food for Fines” drive. From October 1st through November 15th, the McAllen Main Public Library (23rd & Nolana), the Lark Branch Library (2601 Lark Avenue) and the Palm View Branch Library (3401 Jordan Avenue) will collect non-perishable food items and the library system will waive $1 from library fines for each item donated. Up to $10 will be waived per person.
Library director Kate Horan said “Food for Fines” is one way of giving back to the community of McAllen Public Library. As an official drop-off site, all food collected will be donated to the Food Bank RGV. “This is a way of saying, ‘come back, we miss you,’ to patrons who are staying away due to overdue fines,” said Horan, “and to encourage patrons to return library materials so others can enjoy them. Patrons who have been away for some time may not realize how much the library has to offer. This is a chance for them to rediscover how MPL is meeting the needs of the community.”
Items that will be accepted must be:
- Sealed
- Nonperishable
- Not expired
- Multi-serving
- In non-glass containers
