McAllen, TX – Yesterday at 10:00 a.m. McAllen International Airport celebrated the fifth year opening of its annual Ofrenda Exhibit, now on display through November 5th, in the airport lobby.

McAllen International Airport hosted a Dia de los Muertos program including a traditional serenade, food and a Catrina monologue to honor the lives of loved ones who have passed.

This year, MFE displayed a distinctive sand painting also known as Tapete de Arena, a welcoming addition to the Ofrenda typically placed in front of the installation to honor our departed loved ones. To achieve the vibrant colors, the intricate artwork incorporates sand, sawdust, and mineral pigments.

The artwork "Evolution of the Catrina" was constructed by Oaxacan artists from Collectivo Mexico en las Artes to commemorate the 5th anniversary of McAllen International Airport's traditional Ofrenda Exhibit.

“The City of McAllen welcomes travelers flying through our airport to enjoy the beautiful Ofrenda that celebrates the culture we have fostered in our region. McAllen International Airport proudly presents to the community and visitors a traditional Ofrenda to remember our departed loved ones,” said McAllen Mayor, Javier Villalobos.

The Ofrenda display gives the public a glimpse of what they can experience in Mexico during this time of the year when flying through McAllen International Airport.

“In McAllen, we value the culture and artistic expressions as essential components to elevate the quality of life of residents and visitors. As an international city, we want to ensure that visitors from all over the world feel welcome when traveling for business or education purposes or when visiting family and friends”, said McAllen City Manager, Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E.
