Financial website listed McAllen as one of 11 best places in Texas to retire
Financial website GoBankingRates.com recently rated Texas as a great place to retire, highlighting its tropical climate, low cost of living and no state income tax. For many retirees, safety is also a top consideration, so GoBankingRates.com went a step further and compiled a list of the 11 safest places to retire in Texas, with McAllen making the list once again. They ranked cities highest for the low crime rates, comfortable amenities and affordable housing.

McAllen’s location in the Rio Grande Valley was highlighted, with its temperate weather and proximity to Mexico, which make McAllen an appealing retirement destination. With approximately 143,000 residents, McAllen is the third-ranked safest city in the country for 2023 according to SmartAsset.com’s Top 10 Safest Cities list. Property crime is also lower than average. Housing is also affordable, costing around $285,000 on average according to Redfin. McAllen offers a unique blend of Tex-Mex culture, food and entertainment.
