City of McAllen Addresses Homelessness through Emergency Solutions Grant Program

Residents encourage to give feedback via online survey

The City of McAllen, in partnership with the Hidalgo County Urban County Program, is launching their Annual Point in Time (PIT) Event on January 25, 2024. Through the PIT, the community is able to obtain a report on current state of homelessness in the city and county. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) uses the data from PIT counts to evaluate the effectiveness of local agencies' efforts to address homelessness and to determine funding amounts for them, and also compiles this data into the Annual Homeless Assessment Report, which is provided to Congress.

“It’s important we hear from our community, so we can receive the appropriate funding to take action on how to better address homelessness in McAllen,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos.

The City McAllen and the Hidalgo County Urban County Program each received a separate Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) allocation from HUD to address the continued impact of homelessness to assist individuals, or households who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, and other vulnerable populations, by providing housing, rental assistance, supportive services, and non-congregate shelter, to reduce homelessness and increase housing stability.
