Families are invited to join McAllen Public Library's award-winning Día celebration, honoring El día de los niños/ El día de los libros (Children’s Day/ Book Day). This community event will take place on Sunday, April 28, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Main Library, located at 4001 N. 23rd St. in McAllen.
Día, a nationally recognized initiative, is an extension of Children’s Day, which was established in 1925 to emphasize the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, renowned children’s book author Pat Mora proposed the idea of linking childhood celebrations with literacy, giving rise to El día de los niños/ El día de los libros. Today, Día highlights the significance of literacy for children of all backgrounds.
This year's celebration promises an engaging lineup of activities for children and teens, including author presentations by Monica Velasquez and Gaby Tijerina, as well as a special visit by the beloved children's book character, Pete the Cat. Children and teens will have the opportunity to receive a free book while supplies last. Additionally, the event will feature music, performances, community partners, snacks, crafts, and other exciting activities.
Director of McAllen Public Library, Kate Horan, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming event, stating, “Día is a wonderful occasion to celebrate children and foster a love for reading. We are thrilled to host this event for the ninth consecutive year and look forward to welcoming families from our community to enjoy a day filled with books, stories, and fun.”
The entire community is encouraged to participate in this celebration of children and literacy. For more information about the event, please contact the McAllen Public Library’s Children’s Department at (956) 681-3010.
