We also recommend that folks walk the mall or shop any of the many retailers in the community to stay cool during the heat of the day.

Additionally, McAllen would like to offer some tips to stay safe during the heat:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day, one cup every 15-20 minutes even when not thirsty.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks.
- Eat light: the more calories taken in; the more body heat produced.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing if safe for job.
- Apply 15 SPF or higher sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors.
- Those with chronic medical conditions or taking medication should ask their doctor about heat-related illness.
- Work shorter shifts to get accustomed to the higher temperature.
- Take frequent rest breaks in cool or shaded areas.
