“Fierce Mind, Brave Spirit” will celebrate strength, leadership of McAllen women
The City of McAllen proudly kicked off its celebration of Women’s History Month, honoring the achievements, resilience, and leadership of women in the community. Earlier this evening, Mayor Javier Villalobos and the McAllen City Commission officially proclaimed March as Women’s History Month and March 8 as International Women’s Day, recognizing the profound contributions of women in shaping society.
McAllen stands out among Rio Grande Valley and border municipalities with nearly equal representation of women and men leading city departments—an achievement that underscores the City’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“Why do we celebrate Women's History Month? Because history has shown us time and again that when women lead, communities thrive,” said Mayor Javier Villalobos. “Women have been instrumental in shaping government, business, education, healthcare, and science. Their leadership has driven innovation, strengthened families, and transformed societies.”
Throughout history, women have fought tirelessly for progress—not as passive bystanders but as active changemakers. From securing voting rights to breaking barriers in the workforce, eight generations of women have led movements through advocacy, public speaking, and nonviolent resistance, paving the way for future generations.
“Women are not only nurturing families but also leading industries, inspiring communities, and shaping the future,” added Mayor Villalobos. “In McAllen, we are proud to celebrate the women who have helped build and advance our great city.”
A Celebration of Strength & Leadership
To honor Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, the City of McAllen will host a series of inspiring events:
- Women’s History Month Proclamation – February 24
- International Women’s Day Breakfast Symposium – March 3, McAllen Convention Center, featuring Erika Prosper Nirenberg, a daughter of migrant farmworkers, originally from Weslaco, and now an executive with H-E-B as well as first lady of San Antonio (open to female City of McAllen employees only)
- Speed Mentoring Session – March 25, connecting female employees with women leaders in McAllen city government for career mentorship and networking opportunities.
Fierce Mind, Brave Spirit
This year’s theme, "Fierce Mind, Brave Spirit," honors the courage, determination, and unwavering resilience of women throughout history and today. It’s a call to action to uplift and empower one another, ensuring the next generation of women leaders continues to break barriers and shape the future.
“At the City of McAllen, we celebrate not just the women leading today but also those who will lead tomorrow,” said City Manager Isaac J. Tawil. “The month’s activities are about inspiring the next generation of women to step forward, embrace leadership, and take our city and region to new heights.”
For the past seven years, McAllen has proudly honored Women’s History Month, recognizing the remarkable contributions of women in the community. This year’s celebration promises to be one of the most impactful yet, as the city continues to champion the spirit of fearless leadership and bold innovation.
